No Ads, No Tracking: The Economics of a Free Network

A social platform with no advertising and no analytics has to be paid for somehow. Here is the model beTweet is built on.

If you are not the customer and you are not the product, who pays for the servers? This is the first question anyone serious about a non-advertising social network has to answer. beTweet's answer is deliberately modest. A chronological microblogging network with no recommendation engine is computationally cheap. There is no model inference in the hot path, no feature store, no real-time ranking. The expensive parts of a modern social platform — the ad targeting pipeline, the engagement ML, the data warehouse — simply do not exist here. What remains is: a Postgres database, an object store for media, an SMTP provider, and a small Rust binary. beTweet is currently funded by its operators. There is no venture capital with a growth mandate, no advertising revenue, no data licensing deal.
